Þiðrek

Þiðrek, also known as Theodoric, is a prominent figure in Germanic heroic legends, most notably in the medieval Icelandic Þiðrekssaga. The saga, compiled in Norway in the 13th century, draws heavily on various Germanic heroic traditions, including those of the Goths, Franks, and Lombards. Þiðrek himself is a character whose historical basis is generally understood to be derived from the historical Gothic king Theodoric the Great, who reigned in the late 5th and early 6th centuries.

The Þiðrekssaga presents Þiðrek as a powerful and wise king of Holmgard (a city often identified with Novgorod in Russia). The narrative follows his adventures, battles, and interactions with a wide array of legendary heroes and villains. These include figures like his foster father Walid, his adversary Ermanaric (Amaring) of the Huns, and various other warriors and sorcerers. The saga is notable for its eclectic nature, incorporating diverse motifs and stories from across the Germanic world, reflecting the extensive cultural exchange of the period.

While the historical Theodoric was a significant political and military leader in post-Roman Europe, the Þiðrek of the saga is a much more mythologized and larger-than-life character.
