Öljynvaihto is the Finnish term for an oil change, a crucial maintenance procedure for internal combustion engines. It involves draining the old, degraded lubricating oil from the engine and replacing it with fresh oil. This process is vital for several reasons. Lubricating oil reduces friction between moving engine parts, preventing wear and tear. Over time, oil breaks down due to heat and contaminants like metal shavings, combustion byproducts, and dirt. This degradation diminishes its lubricating properties and can lead to increased engine damage.

During an oil change, the old oil is typically drained from the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. Simultaneously, the oil filter, which traps impurities, is also removed and replaced with a new one. Once the old oil is fully drained and the new filter is in place, fresh engine oil of the correct viscosity and type for the specific vehicle is added to the engine.

Regular oil changes extend the life of an engine, improve fuel efficiency, and help maintain optimal engine performance.
