Öljykemikaalit, often translated as petrochemicals, are chemical products derived from petroleum or natural gas. These substances form the building blocks for a vast array of materials essential to modern life. The refining process separates crude oil and natural gas into various fractions, which are then further processed through chemical reactions to yield specific chemical compounds.

Key petrochemicals include olefins like ethylene and propylene, and aromatics such as benzene, toluene, and xylene. Ethylene is a primary component in the production of polyethylene, a widely used plastic found in packaging, films, and containers.
