Évolué is a French adjective and the past participle of the verb évoluer. It designates something that has developed or progressed to a more advanced, mature, or complex state. The word originates from Latin evolutus, through the French verb évoluer, carrying the core idea of unfolding, growth or change over time. In everyday use, évolué describes processes, systems, ideas, or organisms that have undergone notable development.

In practice, it modifies nouns: une technologie évoluée, un organisme évolué, un système évolué. The feminine form is évoluée; the plural masculine évolués, feminine évoluées. Related adjectives include évolutif or évolutive, meaning relating to or capable of evolution, and the noun évolution referring to the process itself.

Historical and social usage: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, anthropology and ethnography sometimes used expressions like "peuple évolué" or "nation évoluée" to rank groups by an alleged level of civilization, often reflecting Eurocentric assumptions and paternalism.
