The application of change point models is widespread across numerous fields. In finance, they can be used to identify market regime shifts or periods of increased volatility. In environmental science, they might detect sudden changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, or pollution levels. Quality control in manufacturing often employs these models to spot when a production process deviates from its normal operating parameters. Healthcare researchers use them to analyze patient data for changes in vital signs or disease progression.

There are various statistical approaches to change point modeling. Some methods assume the data follows a specific distribution and look for changes in the parameters of that distribution. Others are non-parametric, making fewer assumptions about the data's underlying distribution.
