Älykaiuttimet, commonly known as smart speakers, are wireless speakers equipped with built-in virtual assistants. These devices can process voice commands, enabling users to perform various tasks without physical interaction. Popular virtual assistants include Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri.

The primary function of an älykaiutin is to respond to voice queries. Users can ask questions about weather forecasts, news updates, traffic conditions, or general knowledge. They can also control other smart home devices, such as lights, thermostats, and locks, by issuing voice commands. Music playback is another core feature, with älykaiuttimet able to stream music from various online services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

Beyond these basic functions, älykaiuttimet can manage calendars, set alarms and timers, make calls, and send messages. They often integrate with a wide range of third-party applications and services, expanding their capabilities. For example, users can order food, book rideshares, or play interactive games through their älykaiutin.

Connectivity is typically achieved through Wi-Fi, allowing the älykaiutin to access the internet and communicate with other devices on the home network. Some models also offer Bluetooth connectivity for direct audio streaming from smartphones or tablets. The device's microphone constantly listens for a wake word, after which it records and transmits the user's voice command to cloud-based servers for processing. The response is then sent back to the älykaiutin for audio output. Privacy concerns are often associated with these devices due to their always-listening microphones.
