Övertemperaturreläer, also known as thermal cut-off relays or thermal overload relays, are safety devices designed to protect electrical equipment from damage caused by excessive heat. They function by monitoring the temperature of a component and interrupting the electrical circuit when a predetermined temperature threshold is reached. This prevents overheating that could lead to insulation failure, fire, or destruction of the equipment.

These relays typically contain a bimetallic strip or a similar temperature-sensitive element. When the temperature rises, the bimetallic strip bends or deforms, activating a switch that opens the circuit. Once the temperature drops below a certain reset point, the bimetallic strip returns to its original position, allowing the circuit to be re-established, either automatically or manually depending on the relay's design.
