The primary method of alloy production involves melting the constituent metals together in precise proportions. Once molten, they are thoroughly mixed, and the resulting liquid alloy is then cooled and solidified. Different cooling rates can influence the final microstructure and properties of the alloy. Alloying can also be achieved through solid-state diffusion, where metals are heated to high temperatures below their melting points, allowing atoms to migrate and intermix. Powder metallurgy offers another route, where metal powders are mixed and then compacted and sintered to form the alloy.

The composition of an alloy is crucial. Even small additions of certain elements can dramatically alter the material's behavior. For example, the addition of carbon to iron creates steel, a much stronger and more versatile material than pure iron. Similarly, copper and zinc are combined to form brass, and copper and tin form bronze. The deliberate creation of specific alloys has been a cornerstone of technological advancement throughout history, from ancient bronze age tools to modern high-performance aerospace materials.
