öszetett

Összetett is a Hungarian adjective meaning composed of several parts; it is used to describe things that are not simple, but built from multiple components. The term is common in linguistics, mathematics, and everyday language, and can translate as "composite" or "complex" depending on the context.

In language, two main uses are common: összetett szó and összetett mondat. An összetett szó is a compound word formed from two or more morphemes, often without a separator. Examples include vasútállomás (railway station) and könyvtár (library). An összetett mondat, or complex sentence, contains one main clause and at least one subordinate clause, connected by a conjunction or relative pronoun, for example Elmentem, mert esik az eső.

In mathematics, összetett szám means composite number: an integer greater than 1 that is not prime. It has at least one divisor other than 1 and itself, e.g., 4, 6, 9, 12. This is contrasted with prímszám (prime numbers).

In general usage, the word also describes tasks, systems, or phenomena that are not simple but involve multiple elements, for example összetett feladat (complex task) or összetett rendszer (complex system). The term emphasizes combination and integration rather than singularity.

Etimologically, összetett derives from the prefix össze- meaning together and the notion of composition; it is often used interchangeably with összetétel in describing formed structures.
