Öryggjarjarðtenging, often translated as safety grounding or protective earthing, is a fundamental electrical safety measure. Its primary purpose is to prevent electric shock by providing a safe path for fault current to flow to the earth. This is achieved by connecting the metallic non-current-carrying parts of electrical equipment, such as the casing of appliances or the metal conduits of wiring, to the ground.

In a properly grounded system, if a live wire accidentally touches the metal casing of a device, the fault current will flow through the grounding wire to the earth.
