Önellátásban is a Hungarian term referring to living independently and managing daily life in one’s own home with or without external support. It is a central aim of social and health care systems to promote autonomy and reduce the need for long-term institutional care.

The concept covers activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. This includes personal care (bathing, dressing, feeding), mobility and safety within the home, meal planning and preparation, housekeeping and laundry, shopping, budgeting, medication management, and organization of appointments and transportation. The goal is for individuals to maintain an acceptable level of independence, with adaptations and supports as needed to sustain safety and quality of life.

Supports and services enabling self-sufficiency include home-based offers such as házi segítségnyújtás (home care assistance) and other community services, as well as rehabilitative input from occupational and physical therapy. Assisting devices, home modifications (for example, grab bars, ramps), and transport support are common components. Telecare and digital health solutions may also play a role in monitoring and enabling independent living. Planning is typically person-centered and may involve assessments by health and social professionals.

Policy context emphasizes reducing institutionalization, promoting social inclusion, and upholding the right to independent living within legal and financial frameworks of health insurance and social welfare. Challenges include access and funding, workforce capacity, safety concerns, and ensuring ongoing assessment as health and living circumstances change.
