Öljynporaus, also known as oil drilling, is the process of creating an artificial opening in the Earth's crust to find and extract petroleum (oil) and natural gas. This process is a crucial part of the fossil fuel industry, supplying energy for transportation, heating, and various industrial applications. The exploration phase typically involves seismic surveys to identify potential underground reservoirs. Once a promising location is found, a drilling rig is erected.

Drilling rigs are complex structures that can be located on land or offshore. A wellbore is created by rotating a drill bit at the end of a drill string, grinding through rock layers. Drilling fluid, or "mud," is pumped down the drill string and circulates back up, lubricating the bit, cooling the wellbore, and bringing rock cuttings to the surface. As the wellbore deepens, sections are lined with steel pipes called casing, which are cemented in place to prevent collapse and isolate different geological formations.

Once the oil or gas reservoir is reached, special tools are used to complete the well, allowing hydrocarbons to flow to the surface. This can involve perforating the casing within the reservoir zone. Extraction methods vary depending on the reservoir's characteristics, ranging from natural flow due to reservoir pressure to artificial lift techniques like pumping. Environmental considerations and safety protocols are paramount throughout the entire oil drilling process.
