Öosüsteemiteenustele, or ecosystem services, are the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. Provisioning services include the products obtained from ecosystems, such as food, water, and timber. Regulating services encompass the ecosystem's functions that regulate processes, like climate regulation, water purification, and pest control. Cultural services refer to the non-material benefits people derive from ecosystems, including spiritual, recreational, and aesthetic values. Supporting services are the primary productivity and nutrient cycling processes that underpin the other services.

Ecosystem services are crucial for human well-being and economic development. They support biodiversity, maintain ecosystem health, and contribute to sustainable development. However, these services are often taken for granted and undervalued. Human activities, such as urbanization, agriculture, and industrialization, can degrade ecosystems and reduce the availability of ecosystem services. Therefore, it is essential to manage and conserve ecosystems to ensure the continued provision of these vital services.

The concept of ecosystem services was first introduced in the 1980s and has since gained significant attention in environmental science and policy. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) in 2005 highlighted the importance of ecosystem services and their role in sustainable development. The MA identified 25 essential ecosystem services and emphasized the need for integrated management of these services to achieve sustainable development goals.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to value and integrate ecosystem services into decision-making processes. This includes the development of tools and frameworks to assess and quantify the value of ecosystem services, as well as the integration of these values into economic assessments and policy-making. By doing so, it is possible to promote the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems, ensuring the continued provision of ecosystem services for future generations.
