õhulaevades, known more commonly as airships, are lighter-than-air aircraft that gain their lift from buoyancy. They are propelled through the air by engines and steered by fins and rudders. The term "õhulaev" is the Estonian word for airship, encompassing all types of these aerial vehicles.

Historically, airships played a significant role in transportation and military operations. Early designs, like the Zeppelin, were rigid airships with internal frameworks, allowing for large volumes and extended flight ranges. Non-rigid airships, often called blimps, rely on internal gas pressure to maintain their shape. Semi-rigid airships combine elements of both, featuring a rigid keel for structural support.

The golden age of airships was in the early 20th century, with transatlantic voyages becoming a reality. However, a series of accidents, most notably the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, led to a decline in their popularity and development, largely due to the flammability of hydrogen, the lifting gas used in many large airships.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in airships. Modern designs often utilize non-flammable helium as the lifting gas and incorporate advanced materials and propulsion systems. Potential applications include cargo transport, surveillance, tourism, and scientific research, offering advantages such as lower fuel consumption, quiet operation, and the ability to hover for extended periods.
