Óvirkurs, also known as Icelandic supervolcano, refers to the volcanic system located beneath the Vatnajökull glacier in southeastern Iceland. This system is one of the most active and potentially hazardous volcanic regions in the world, consisting of a large magma chamber beneath the surface. The name "Óvirkurs" translates to "inactive" in English, though this is somewhat misleading as the system has shown significant activity throughout geological history.

The primary feature of the Óvirkurs system is the Katla volcano, a stratovolcano known for its explosive eruptions. These eruptions often trigger jökulhlaups, or glacial outburst floods, due to the rapid melting of Vatnajökull’s ice. Historical records document several major eruptions, including those in 934, 1159, 1222, 1510, 1625, 1755, 1823, 1860, 1918, and 1955, with the 1918 eruption being particularly devastating. The system is monitored closely due to its potential to cause widespread disruption in Iceland and beyond, given its explosive nature and proximity to populated areas.

Geologically, the Óvirkurs system is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates diverge. The magma beneath the glacier is believed to be vast, with estimates suggesting it could contain enough material for a supereruption—a rare but catastrophic event capable of altering global climate. While such an event has not occurred in recorded history, evidence from ice cores and geological studies indicates past supereruptions, such as the one linked to the 734 CE eruption of Katla, which may have contributed to historical climate anomalies.

Scientific research focuses on improving eruption forecasting, monitoring ground deformation, and assessing volcanic hazards. The Icelandic Meteorological Office and other institutions maintain seismic and gas monitoring networks to detect early signs of activity. Public awareness campaigns emphasize preparedness, given the region’s high volcanic risk.
