Óvirkjun, in Icelandic discourse, refers to the policy or stance of opposing the construction or expansion of hydroelectric power plants and related infrastructure. The term is derived from ó-, a negating prefix, and virkjun, meaning power generation or a hydroelectric facility. In practice, óvirkjun describes a position that aims to refrain from building new hydropower projects or to halt ongoing development in order to protect natural landscapes, rivers, and ecosystems, or to prioritize other land uses and sustainability considerations.

The concept appears in political debates, environmental activism, and public discourse in Iceland, where decisions about damming rivers and developing energy infrastructure have long been contentious.
