Abjads, like the Arabic and Hebrew scripts, primarily represent consonants, with vowels often inferred or indicated by diacritical marks. Abugidas, such as Devanagari used for Hindi, represent consonant-vowel units, where the vowel sound is inherent in the consonant symbol and can be modified by diacritics.

The choice and evolution of a writing system are often influenced by the phonological structure of the language it represents, as well as cultural and historical factors. Different writing systems have emerged independently in various parts of the world throughout history, demonstrating the universal human need to record and communicate language visually.
