élhelyként

Élhelyként is a Hungarian adverbial form used to denote that a particular place functions as a habitat or living space. It appears mainly in ecological, geographical, and environmental texts to describe how an environment supports living organisms.

Etymology and form: The word is built from the noun élhely (habitat, living place) with the suffix -ként, which indicates role or capacity, i.e., “as a habitat.” In contemporary Hungarian, the more standard construction is usually élőhelyként from élőhely (habitat); élhelyként is encountered as a variant in some sources or regional usage.

Usage and scope: Élhelyként is employed when specifying the function of a site as a habitat for a species, a community, or ecological processes. It can be combined with verbs such as szolgál (to serve), betölt (to fulfil), or megőriz (to preserve) to describe the role of a location. Example: Ez a terület élhelyként szolgál a helyi madárfajok számára. Another example: A területvédelmi intézkedések célja annak biztosítása, hogy több élhelyként funkcionáló terület maradjon a populáció számára.

Relation to other terms: The concept is closely related to élőhely and élettér. While élőhelye/élőhelyünk is the more common term for a habitat, élhelyként appears as a grammatical variant used to explicitly mark the role of a place as a habitat in scholarly prose.
