Åskskydd refers to measures and practices designed to protect people and property from lightning strikes and their harmful effects. Lightning is a powerful electrical discharge that occurs during thunderstorms, capable of causing fires, structural damage, electrocution, and severe injury or death.

The primary goal of åskskydd is to safely divert the lightning's electrical current to the ground, minimizing the risk to exposed individuals and vulnerable structures. For buildings, this typically involves a lightning protection system, commonly known as a lightning rod system. This system consists of a network of conductive materials, including air terminals (rods), conductors (wires), and grounding electrodes, strategically installed on the exterior of a building. The air terminals are placed at the highest points, and they intercept the lightning strike. The conductors then channel the electrical current down the side of the building to the grounding electrodes, which are buried in the earth, effectively dissipating the charge.

Beyond building protection, åskskydd also encompasses advice for personal safety during thunderstorms. When outdoors and lightning is present, it is recommended to seek shelter in a substantial building or a hard-top vehicle. Open fields, isolated tall objects, and bodies of water should be avoided. If caught in the open with no shelter, crouching low to the ground, minimizing contact with the earth, and staying away from metal objects can reduce the risk of a direct strike or ground current. Inside a building, it is advisable to avoid contact with plumbing, electrical appliances, and corded phones, as lightning can travel through these systems. Electronic devices should also be unplugged. Understanding and implementing these åskskydd measures can significantly reduce the dangers associated with thunderstorms.
