Äänivahvuutta, or sound intensity, is a measure of the power carried by sound waves per unit area in a direction perpendicular to that area. It quantifies how much acoustic energy is flowing through a specific region of space. The unit of sound intensity is watts per square meter (W/m²).

Sound intensity is directly related to the amplitude of the sound wave and the density and speed of the medium through which the sound is traveling. A higher amplitude of the pressure or displacement variations in the sound wave results in greater sound intensity. Similarly, denser mediums or mediums with higher sound speeds can transmit more intense sound waves, all other factors being equal.

The relationship between sound intensity and the perceived loudness of a sound is not linear. Instead, human hearing perceives loudness on a logarithmic scale. This is why a doubling of sound intensity does not sound twice as loud. The decibel (dB) scale is commonly used to express sound levels relative to a reference intensity, which is typically the threshold of human hearing.

Measuring sound intensity is important in various fields, including acoustics, environmental noise monitoring, and audio engineering. It helps in understanding sound propagation, assessing noise pollution, and designing effective soundproofing solutions.
