An äänestysmekanismi, or voting mechanism, refers to the set of rules and procedures by which a group of individuals makes a collective decision. It outlines how votes are cast, counted, and aggregated to determine an outcome. The primary goal of any voting mechanism is to translate individual preferences into a group choice.

Various types of voting mechanisms exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Simple plurality voting, where the option with the most votes wins, is common but can fail to represent the majority if no candidate secures over 50% of the vote. Ranked-choice voting, also known as instant-runoff voting, allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference.
