Ääneellisyys refers to the presence of vocal cord vibration during the production of a speech sound. In linguistics, sounds are categorized as either voiced or voiceless. Voiced sounds are produced with the vocal cords vibrating, while voiceless sounds are produced without vibration. This distinction is crucial for differentiating many pairs of consonants in various languages, such as the difference between /b/ and /p/, /d/ and /t/, or /g/ and /k/.

The mechanism of voicing involves the airflow from the lungs passing through the larynx, causing the vocal folds to adduct (come together). As air is pushed through, it sets the vocal folds into vibration. The degree of tension and the airflow rate influence the pitch of the voiced sound. In contrast, for voiceless sounds, the vocal folds are held apart, allowing air to pass through without vibration. Phonetically,ääneellisyys is often indicated using a voicing symbol, such as a tilde above or below a consonant in some transcription systems.
