Államalapítás, literally the founding of the state, is a term used to describe the establishment of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary as a Christian state under Saint Stephen I, around the turn of the 11th century. The process culminated in the consolidation of Magyar rule over the Carpathian Basin, the creation of a centralized royal administration, and the organization of the church within a Christian framework.

Key elements of Államalapítás include the coronation of Stephen as Christian king, the establishment of a constitutional order under a Catholic monarchy, and the creation of a county-based administrative system (vármegyék) headed by royal officials. It also involved the organization of the church hierarchy and the introduction of Latin religious and legal norms, along with the right to grant lands and levy taxes. The Holy Crown of Hungary served as a symbol and instrument of legitimate sovereignty.

Dates and interpretation: most historians place the founding around 1000 or 1001, with the traditional national commemoration on August 20, Saint Stephen’s Day, marking the celebration of the state’s foundation and Stephen’s role as its founder. The term encompasses the broader Christianization and legal settlements that laid the groundwork for the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, a framework that persisted in various forms into modern constitutional reforms.

Today, Államalapítás is commemorated in Hungary as State Foundation Day, reflecting the enduring significance of the early Árpád-era state in national memory and identity.
