Þingeyjars

Þingeyjars is a term that can refer to several related concepts in Iceland, primarily associated with historical parliamentary sites. The most well-known is Þingeyrar, located in Húnaþing vestra in northwestern Iceland. This was a significant assembly site, or þing, dating back to the settlement era. Historically, Þingeyrar was one of the prominent regional assembly locations where local chieftains and freeholders would gather to make laws, settle disputes, and administer justice.

Another important location is Þingvellir, the most famous historical assembly site in Iceland, located in the southwest. While not directly named Þingeyjars, it shares the root "Þing" meaning assembly or parliament, and "vellir" meaning plains. Þingvellir served as the site of the Althing, the national parliament of Iceland, from its foundation in 930 AD until 1798. It was a central gathering place for the entire nation and holds immense cultural and historical significance.

The term Þingeyjars can also encompass the broader concept of these historical assembly grounds across Iceland. These sites were not merely political centers but also served as social and religious hubs.
