Üldkeelt

Üldkeelt is an Estonian term meaning "general language" or "standard language," used to describe the codified variety of a language that serves as the norm for formal communication, education, media and administration. In the Estonian context, üldkeel refers to the standardized form of Estonian that is taught in schools, used in official documents and mass media, and represented in dictionaries and grammar references.

The standard language combines features selected from spoken varieties, historical written norms and prescriptive grammar, aiming for broad mutual intelligibility across regional dialects. Its key components include standardized pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling and syntactic conventions. Institutions such as language academies, dictionaries and school curricula play a central role in developing and maintaining these norms.

Sociolinguistically, üldkeel functions as a unifying code in multilingual or dialectally diverse communities, facilitating interregional communication and public discourse.
