Üldharidussüsteem

Üldharidussüsteem refers to the general education system in Estonia. It encompasses a structured pathway of learning from early childhood to the completion of secondary education. The system is designed to provide all children with a foundational knowledge and skills necessary for further education and active participation in society.

The Estonian general education system is divided into several stages. Pre-primary education, typically for children aged 5 to 7, is an important preparatory phase. Compulsory education begins with primary school, usually starting at age 7, and continues through lower secondary school. This forms the basic education stage, which is mandatory for all students.

Following basic education, students can choose to continue their studies in upper secondary school. This level offers two main pathways: academic upper secondary school, which prepares students for higher education, and vocational upper secondary school, which focuses on specific professional skills and trades. Both pathways lead to a secondary school certificate upon successful completion.

The Ministry of Education and Research oversees the general education system, setting the national curriculum and standards. The curriculum emphasizes core subjects such as languages, mathematics, sciences, and social studies, alongside arts, physical education, and vocational subjects. The system aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a lifelong love of learning. Education in Estonia is largely publicly funded, ensuring accessibility for all citizens.
