Üksiksidemeid, also known as single strands or lone pairs, refers to the unpaired electrons found in the valence shell of an atom. These electrons play a crucial role in chemical bonding and molecular structure. Atoms with unpaired electrons are often highly reactive, seeking to gain, lose, or share these electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration, typically a full outer shell.

The presence of üksiksidemeid is fundamental to understanding covalent bonding, where atoms share electrons to form molecules. In a covalent bond, each participating atom contributes at least one unpaired electron to form a shared pair. However, not all valence electrons necessarily form bonds. Remaining unpaired electrons are referred to as lone pairs or üksiksidemeid.

These lone pairs have significant implications for the geometry and polarity of molecules. According to VSEPR theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory), lone pairs exert repulsive forces on bonding pairs, influencing the arrangement of atoms in three-dimensional space. This repulsion can lead to bent or pyramidal molecular shapes, deviating from ideal linear or tetrahedral geometries. Furthermore, lone pairs contribute to the overall electron distribution within a molecule, affecting its polarity and its interactions with other molecules. For instance, the polarity of water, crucial for its solvent properties, is largely due to the lone pairs on the oxygen atom.
