Überschallantrieben

Überschallantrieben, also known as supersonic drives or supersonic propulsion systems, refer to any propulsion technology designed to accelerate a vehicle to speeds exceeding the speed of sound, which is approximately 343 meters per second or 1,235 kilometers per hour at sea level. Achieving supersonic speeds requires engines capable of generating thrust significantly greater than the drag forces encountered at these velocities.

The most common types of Überschallantrieben are jet engines, particularly turbojets and ramjets, and rocket engines. Turbojets are suitable for sustained supersonic flight at lower altitudes, while ramjets are more efficient at higher speeds and altitudes as they rely on the forward motion of the aircraft to compress incoming air. Rocket engines, which carry their own oxidizer, are not limited by atmospheric conditions and are therefore used for very high-speed applications like space launch vehicles and missiles.

Key challenges in developing Überschallantrieben include managing the extreme heat generated by friction with the air and the compression of air, as well as controlling airflow at supersonic speeds. This often necessitates the use of specialized materials and intricate aerodynamic designs. The efficiency of these engines can also be a concern, as they typically consume fuel at a very high rate.
