Überlichtgeschwindigkeit, often abbreviated as FTL for Faster-Than-Light travel, refers to hypothetical methods of space travel that would allow a spacecraft to travel at speeds exceeding the speed of light. This concept is a staple in science fiction but is currently considered impossible by the laws of physics as understood by general relativity. Einstein's theory posits that as an object with mass approaches the speed of light, its mass increases infinitely, requiring an infinite amount of energy to accelerate it further.

Despite these theoretical barriers, various theoretical concepts have been proposed to circumvent this limitation. These include warp drives, which would involve distorting spacetime around a ship to effectively move it faster than light without the ship itself moving faster locally, and wormholes, which are hypothetical tunnels through spacetime that could connect distant points. Another idea is hyperspace, a theoretical dimension or realm where travel might occur at superluminal speeds.
