Überlaufbecken

Überlaufbecken, often translated as overflow pools or infinity pools, are a type of swimming pool where water flows over one or more edges, creating a visual effect of the water extending to the horizon. The water spills into a hidden channel or catch basin below, where it is recirculated. This design is characterized by the absence of a visible edge on at least one side, giving the illusion that the pool is a part of the surrounding landscape.

The primary purpose of an Überlaufbecken is aesthetic. It is frequently used in luxury resorts and private residences to enhance the visual appeal and create a sense of seamless integration with the environment. The "infinity" effect is particularly striking when the pool overlooks a natural vista, such as the ocean, a valley, or a cityscape. The calm surface of the water, uninterrupted by a typical pool edge, allows for an unobstructed view.

Construction of an Überlaufbecken requires precise engineering to ensure the water flows evenly over the edge and into the catch basin. The balance of water levels and the design of the overflow edge are critical to maintaining the desired visual effect and preventing water loss. These pools can be designed with one, two, three, or even four overflow edges, depending on the architectural concept and desired impact.
