ÜTsang

ÜTsang is a historical and cultural region in Tibet. It is one of the three main provinces of Tibet, alongside Amdo and Kham. ÜTsang is located in the central and southern part of the Tibetan Plateau. This region is considered the heartland of Tibetan civilization and is home to the capital city of Lhasa.

The geography of ÜTsang is characterized by high mountain ranges, vast plateaus, and fertile river valleys, particularly along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which is known as the Brahmaputra in India. The region's altitude ranges significantly, with many areas exceeding 4,000 meters. ÜTsang is predominantly agricultural, with barley cultivation being a staple. The region's climate is generally cold and arid, with distinct seasons.

Historically, ÜTsang has been the center of Tibetan political and religious power. The Ganden Phodrang government, established by the Fifth Dalai Lama, was based in ÜTsang and administered Tibet for centuries. It is also the birthplace of many significant Tibetan Buddhist figures and monasteries, including the Jokhang Temple and the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The majority of the population in ÜTsang are ethnic Tibetans who practice Tibetan Buddhism. The region's culture is rich in traditions, art, and literature, deeply intertwined with its religious heritage.
