Útdíjban

Útdíjban is a Hungarian term that translates to "in toll" or "in toll payment." It refers to the system of collecting fees for the use of certain roads, primarily highways and expressways, in Hungary. This system is managed by the Hungarian State Toll Collection Corporation (Nemzeti Útdíjfizetési Szolgáltató Zrt. or NÚSZ Zrt.).

The útdíjban system primarily operates using an electronic toll collection method. This means that drivers do not typically stop at toll booths. Instead, vehicles are equipped with an electronic device or their license plates are registered with the toll system. As vehicles pass designated toll points or enter toll roads, the system automatically records their passage and charges the appropriate toll fee.

There are different types of tolls within the útdíjban system, depending on the type of road and the weight and emission class of the vehicle. For passenger cars, a vignette-based system is common, where drivers purchase a digital vignette valid for a specific period (e.g., 10 days, one month, or one year). For heavier vehicles, such as trucks and buses, a distance-based toll system is in place, where the fee is calculated based on the distance traveled on toll roads.

The revenue generated from útdíjban is intended to fund the maintenance, development, and operation of the Hungarian road network. Enforcement of the toll system is carried out through various means, including mobile patrols and static cameras. Failure to pay the útdíjban can result in fines.
