Összehúzódáshoz, also known as contraction or constriction, refers to the process by which a muscle or a group of muscles reduces in size or shortens. This phenomenon is a fundamental aspect of muscle physiology and is essential for various movements and functions in the body. Contraction occurs when muscle fibers generate force by sliding over one another, causing the muscle to shorten. This process is initiated by the release of calcium ions, which bind to troponin, a protein complex on the actin filaments. This binding causes a conformational change in the troponin-tropomyosin complex, exposing the myosin-binding sites on the actin filaments. Myosin heads then bind to these sites, forming cross-bridges, and undergo a power stroke, pulling the actin filaments toward the center of the sarcomere, resulting in muscle shortening.

Contraction can be classified into two main types: isometric and isotonic. Isometric contraction occurs when a muscle shortens but the load remains constant, such as when lifting a heavy object without moving it. Isotonic contraction, on the other hand, involves a change in muscle length while the load remains constant, such as during walking or running. Contraction is a highly regulated process, involving the coordinated action of various proteins and signaling molecules. It is essential for various physiological functions, including movement, posture, and maintaining organ function. Dysregulation of contraction can lead to various pathological conditions, such as muscle weakness, spasms, or contractures.
