Ólomüveg

Ólomüveg is the Hungarian term for stained glass. It refers to colored glass that is used to create decorative windows, panels, or other artworks. Historically, ólomüveg was most commonly found in religious buildings like churches and cathedrals, where it was used to depict biblical scenes, saints, and other religious imagery. The vibrant colors and intricate designs of ólomüveg windows have also made them popular in secular architecture, adding aesthetic appeal to homes, public buildings, and even furniture.

The process of creating ólomüveg involves several steps. First, sheets of colored glass are produced by adding metallic oxides to molten glass. These colored glass pieces are then cut into specific shapes, often based on a detailed pattern or cartoon. The edges of the glass pieces are then fitted into H-shaped lead cames, which are strips of lead that hold the glass together. Finally, the lead cames are soldered at their joints, and the entire panel is cemented to make it weatherproof and structurally sound. Modern techniques may also incorporate other metals like copper foil, particularly for smaller, more intricate pieces.
