Élelmiszerhálókat, or food webs, are complex systems that illustrate the feeding relationships within an ecosystem. They show how energy flows from one organism to another through consumption. Unlike a simple food chain, which depicts a single linear path of energy, a food web is a more realistic representation of interconnected food chains, demonstrating that most organisms consume multiple types of food and are, in turn, prey for several different predators.

The foundation of most food webs is formed by producers, primarily plants and algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, also known as herbivores. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, feed on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are at a higher trophic level, feeding on secondary consumers, and so on. Detritivores and decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning nutrients to the ecosystem for producers to utilize.

The structure of a food web can vary greatly depending on the ecosystem. Tropical rainforests and coral reefs, for example, tend to have highly diverse and complex food webs due to the large number of species present. In contrast, simpler ecosystems like deserts or tundra may have less intricate food webs with fewer species. The health and stability of an ecosystem are often directly related to the complexity and resilience of its food web. Disruptions to one part of the web, such as the removal of a keystone species, can have cascading effects throughout the entire system. Understanding food webs is essential for ecological research, conservation efforts, and assessing the impact of environmental changes.
