Årstabroarna

Årstabroarna, meaning "The Årsta Bridges" in English, refers to a pair of railway bridges crossing the Södermalm district and the inlet of Årstaviken in Stockholm, Sweden. Both bridges carry railway traffic and are significant infrastructure elements in the city's transportation network.

The first bridge, known as the old Årsta Bridge, was inaugurated in 1929. It was a double-track railway bridge designed by Folke Bohm. This bridge served as a crucial connection for the national railway network, allowing trains to cross between central Stockholm and southern Sweden. Over time, increased train traffic necessitated a new, larger bridge.

The new Årsta Bridge, also a double-track railway bridge, was completed and opened in 2005. It was designed by architect Lasse Vretblad and engineers Peab. This modern structure runs parallel to the old bridge and significantly increased the capacity for railway traffic. The construction of the new bridge was part of a larger project to improve the Stockholm commuter rail network.

Both bridges are still in use today, with the newer bridge handling the majority of the traffic. The old bridge is primarily used for freight and long-distance trains, while the new bridge is largely dedicated to commuter and high-speed trains. The Årstabroarna are visually distinctive landmarks in the Stockholm landscape, contributing to the city's skyline and its functionality as a transportation hub.
