Ångkompressionscykler, commonly known as vapor-compression refrigeration cycles, are the most prevalent thermodynamic method used for refrigeration and air conditioning. The fundamental principle involves a refrigerant fluid undergoing a series of phase changes and pressure variations to absorb heat from a low-temperature source and reject it to a high-temperature sink.

The cycle typically consists of four main components: an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve. In the evaporator, the liquid refrigerant at low pressure absorbs heat from the space to be cooled, causing it to vaporize into a low-pressure gas. This gas is then drawn into the compressor, where its pressure and temperature are significantly increased. The high-pressure, high-temperature vapor then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses back into a high-pressure liquid. Finally, this liquid passes through the expansion valve, which reduces its pressure and temperature, preparing it to re-enter the evaporator and continue the cycle.

The efficiency of an ångkompressionscykel is measured by its coefficient of performance (COP), which is the ratio of the cooling effect to the work input required by the compressor. Factors influencing COP include the evaporating and condensing temperatures, as well as the efficiency of the components. Modern systems often employ variable-speed compressors and advanced control strategies to optimize performance and energy consumption. Common refrigerants used in these cycles have evolved over time due to environmental concerns, with a shift towards refrigerants having lower global warming potentials.
