Ångavätskejämvikt refers to the dynamic equilibrium that exists when a liquid is in a closed container. At this point, the rate at which molecules escape the liquid phase to become vapor is equal to the rate at which vapor molecules return to the liquid phase. This means that the amount of liquid and the amount of vapor remain constant over time, even though the process of evaporation and condensation continues at the molecular level.

The pressure exerted by the vapor in equilibrium with its liquid is known as the vapor pressure. Vapor pressure is dependent on the temperature of the liquid. As temperature increases, the kinetic energy of the liquid molecules increases, leading to a higher rate of evaporation and thus a higher vapor pressure. Conversely, a decrease in temperature lowers the vapor pressure.

Different liquids have different vapor pressures at the same temperature. This is due to variations in intermolecular forces. Liquids with weaker intermolecular forces, such as diethyl ether, have higher vapor pressures than those with stronger forces, like water, because fewer intermolecular attractions need to be overcome for molecules to escape into the vapor phase.
