The classification of consonant sounds is based on several phonetic features. Place of articulation describes where in the vocal tract the obstruction occurs, such as bilabial (using both lips), alveolar (using the tongue tip against the alveolar ridge), or velar (using the back of the tongue against the soft palate). Manner of articulation describes how the airflow is obstructed, distinguishing between stops (plosives), fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids (lateral and rhotic), and glides. Voicing is another crucial feature, indicating whether the vocal cords vibrate during the production of the sound. Voiced consonants are produced with vocal cord vibration, while voiceless consonants are produced without it.

Different languages have distinct inventories of consonant sounds. For instance, Finnish has a relatively simple set of consonants compared to languages like English or Russian, which feature a wider range of sounds. The study of these consonant sounds is a fundamental aspect of phonetics and phonology, helping to understand the sound systems of languages and how they are perceived and produced.
