Äänimiseys is a term that describes the phenomenon of sound becoming less intense or noticeable as it travels through a medium. This reduction in sound intensity is primarily due to a combination of factors including absorption, scattering, and spreading. When sound waves encounter a medium, such as air, water, or solid materials, the energy of the sound wave is transferred to the particles of the medium, causing them to vibrate and dissipate the energy as heat. This process is known as absorption.

Scattering occurs when sound waves encounter irregularities or inhomogeneities within the medium, causing them to deviate from their original path in various directions. This redirection of sound energy away from the intended path also contributes to the overall reduction in intensity. Furthermore, as sound waves propagate outwards from their source, they spread over an increasingly larger area.
