Átalakítókat, often translated as transformers or converters, is a broad term encompassing devices designed to change one form of energy or signal into another. In the realm of electronics, the most common type of átalakító is a transformer. Transformers are electrical devices that transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. They are typically used to increase or decrease alternating current (AC) voltage levels. This is achieved through coils of wire wrapped around a magnetic core. The ratio of turns in these coils determines the voltage transformation.

Beyond electrical transformers, the term átalakító can also refer to signal converters. These devices alter the format or characteristics of a signal. For example, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) transforms an analog signal, which is continuous in nature, into a digital signal, which is discrete. Conversely, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) performs the opposite function. These converters are fundamental to modern electronics, enabling the processing and transmission of information in various forms.

In a more general sense, átalakító can even describe mechanisms that change physical properties. This could include heat exchangers that convert thermal energy from one medium to another, or mechanical converters that change rotational motion into linear motion, or vice versa.
