The primary function of the állítmány is to complete the meaning of the sentence by providing information about what the subject is doing or what its state is. For example, in the sentence "A fiú fut" (The boy runs), "fut" is the állítmány, describing the action of the subject "A fiú". When a noun or adjective functions as the állítmány, it usually requires a form of the verb "van" (to be). For instance, "Ő orvos" (He is a doctor) uses "orvos" as the állítmány, linked by an implied "van".

The position of the állítmány in a Hungarian sentence can vary, but it often follows the subject. However, word order in Hungarian is flexible and can be influenced by emphasis. Understanding the állítmány is crucial for constructing grammatically correct and meaningful Hungarian sentences. It is the core component that tells us what is happening or what is true about the subject.
