The state vector encapsulates all measurable properties of a quantum system, such as its energy, momentum, and spin. However, quantum mechanics states that certain properties cannot be known with perfect certainty simultaneously. This is described by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. When a measurement is performed on a quantum system, its state vector collapses into one of the possible outcomes, and the specific outcome is probabilistic.

The evolution of the state vector over time is governed by the Schrödinger equation. This equation is a fundamental principle in quantum mechanics, describing how the quantum state of a physical system changes over time. The Schrödinger equation is a linear partial differential equation.

In simpler terms, imagine a system with many possible configurations. The state vector is a way to represent the probability distribution of all these configurations. A measurement forces the system to pick one configuration, and the state vector changes to reflect this new, definite state. The concept of the state vector is central to understanding quantum phenomena like superposition and entanglement.
