Áhyggjur

Áhyggjur is the Icelandic term for worries, concerns, or anxieties. The word denotes cognitive preoccupation with potential problems or undesirable outcomes and can range from mild, everyday concern to persistent preoccupation that impairs concentration or sleep. It is commonly used to describe normal emotional responses to uncertain situations, rather than a clinical diagnosis on its own. Persistent or excessive áhyggjur, however, may contribute to or indicate anxiety disorders when they become hard to control and disrupt daily functioning.

Etymology: The word is formed from the prefix á- (on/about) and hyggja (to think or reflect), yielding a sense of careful consideration that has evolved in modern Icelandic to mean worry or concern.
