A zálogtárgy, in Hungarian, refers to an item pledged as security for a loan. This concept is central to the practice of pawnbroking, where individuals or businesses temporarily surrender valuable possessions to a pawnbroker in exchange for a cash loan. The zálogtárgy serves as collateral, meaning that if the borrower fails to repay the loan within the agreed-upon timeframe, the pawnbroker has the legal right to sell the item to recoup their financial losses.

Common types of zálogtárgy include jewelry, precious metals, electronics, musical instruments, and tools. The value of the item is assessed by the pawnbroker, who then determines the loan amount based on a percentage of its estimated worth. The borrower receives the loan and a receipt detailing the terms of the agreement, including the loan amount, interest rate, and the redemption period.

If the borrower wishes to reclaim their zálogtárgy, they must repay the principal loan amount plus any accrued interest and fees before the redemption period expires. Failure to do so results in the forfeiture of the item, allowing the pawnbroker to dispose of it.
