Zeolitic, or zeolithische in German, refers to substances or properties related to zeolites, a class of microporous aluminosilicate materials.

Zeolites have a three‑dimensional framework built from SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra linked by shared oxygen atoms. Substitution of aluminum for silicon introduces negative framework charges balanced by exchangeable cations such as sodium, potassium, or calcium that reside in the pores. The resulting microporous structure yields well-defined pore networks and high surface areas, enabling selective adsorption and catalysis.

There are natural zeolites (for example clinoptilolite and mordenite) and synthetic variants (such as zeolite A, FAU, and ZSM-5). The pores are suited to molecular-scale separations and, in some cases, shape-selective reactions. This combination of ion exchange, adsorption, and catalytic properties is the hallmark of zeolitic materials.

Applications span catalysis in refining and petrochemistry, gas separations and humidity control, water softening through ion exchange, and environmental remediation. Acidic zeolites like certain ZSM-5 and Y-type materials function as catalysts with shape selectivity, while many zeolites serve as durable adsorbents or exchangers in industrial processes and consumer products.

The term zeolite derives from Greek roots meaning “boiling stone,” reflecting early observations of water release during heating. Since Cronstedt’s discovery in the 18th century, synthetic zeolites have broadened the structural diversity and range of applications beyond natural minerals.
