The term "zenuwgraft" is derived from the Greek words "zenon," meaning to close, and "uw," referring to the eyelid. The procedure involves the transfer of a piece of tissue from one part of the body to the upper eyelid to correct or improve its function.

The primary indication for zenuwgrafts is ptosis, a condition characterized by drooping of the upper eyelid. This can occur due to various causes, including nerve damage, muscle weakness, or congenital abnormalities. Zenuwgrafts can help to elevate the eyelid, improving vision and reducing the risk of complications such as corneal exposure and irritation.

The surgical technique involves harvesting a piece of tissue, typically from the temporalis muscle or the orbicularis oculi muscle, and attaching it to the levator aponeurosis, the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately one to two hours to complete.

Post-operative care includes the use of eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation, as well as the application of a protective eye shield to prevent accidental rubbing of the eye. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, although it may take several weeks for the eyelid to fully recover and regain its normal position.

Zenuwgrafts have been shown to be effective in improving eyelid function and quality of life for patients with ptosis. However, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including infection, bleeding, and scarring.
