zbatoi

Zbatoi is a ceremonial artifact and social practice in the fictional Zbaite culture of the Aruida Archipelago. It functions as a container for memory tokens and as a ritual instrument during annual gatherings marking the harvest and solstice.

The term zbatoi derives from the Zbaite root meaning "to remember" and is paired with a suffix that denotes instrument. Traditionally carved from bamboo, hardwood, or fired clay, a zbatoi is a rectangular box about 15–20 cm long, with a fitted lid and a narrow inner compartment for tokens.

Participants collect memory tokens throughout the year, placing them in the zbatoi during preparation for the festival. Elders select tokens to be read aloud by a designated storyteller, and the stories are shared with younger members, reinforcing lineage and local lore.

The practice emphasizes social cohesion, intergenerational dialogue, and a shared sense of place. In modern settings, zbatoi boxes may be enamelled or crafted in ceramic, and digital tokens or replicas are sometimes used to adapt the ritual for urban communities.

Historically, the zbatoi tradition is said to have formed in the early medieval period on several islands and spread through trade networks. Today it survives in rural districts and revival movements, though the scope of its use varies by community.
