zaloge

Zaloge is a village located in Slovenia, situated in the Žirovnica Municipality of the Upper Carniola region. The village is nestled in a mountainous area, near the Sava Dolinka river.

The village's history dates back to the 14th century. The name "Zaloge" is derived from the Slovenian word "zalog," meaning "enclosure" or "alley." Zaloge was a small settlement on the north-eastern slope of the Golica mountain, with its houses and farms connected by an alley-like path.

The village underwent significant changes during the 17th and 18th centuries, including the construction of new homes, a church, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Faith. The chapel is still in use today as a place of worship.

Before the second half of the 20th century, Zaloge was an agrarian community, relying heavily on agriculture and livestock. Many locals made a living through traditional farming practices, with an emphasis on vegetable and fruit production.

Since the 1980s, Zaloge has seen an increase in migration to larger cities in Slovenia, such as Kranj. This has led to a decrease in the village's population, but those who remain continue to maintain the area's cultural and traditional heritage.

Today, Zaloge remains a small, close-knit community with a strong sense of identity and history. Despite the challenges it faces due to depopulation, the village continues to preserve its unique traditions and customs, making it a valuable part of Slovenia's cultural landscape.
