It is a voluntary scheme where farmers receive financial aid for undertaking specific environmental actions beyond standard agricultural requirements.

The objective of the environmental compensation system is to promote biodiversity, protect water resources, reduce soil erosion, and mitigate climate change impacts through agricultural land use. Farmers can choose from various environmental measures, such as creating buffer zones along waterways, maintaining species-rich grasslands, using less fertilizer and pesticides, or adopting organic farming methods.

The level of compensation is determined by the specific measures chosen and the extent of their implementation. Eligibility and application processes are managed by the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) and regional authorities. The system is co-financed by the European Union and national funds.
